7 Chief Loa: Baron Samedi

saintmartindeporres

Like Papa Legba, guardian of the crossroads, Baron Samedi stands at the intersection of life and death. The first man buried at any cemetery becomes Baron Samedi’s door into the physical world. Baron Samedi is renown for his dignified manners expertly blended with foul language, and lurid sexual behavior. His fondness for consuming copious amounts of food and drink is well known too. Baron Samedi’s favorite is rum infused with 21 scotch bonnet peppers for a month before serving. Also, Baron Samedi enjoys beans, toasted peanuts, bread, spicy dark rum, and cigars.

The Baron Samedi is emperor of the Ghede nation, spirits of the dead, and all Ghede readily bow to him. The Baron Samedi is one of the three Kings of Vodou and among the mightiest of magicians and healers. In our lineage of Puerto Rican Vodou, the Baron Samedi is a 33rd degree Mason and can authorize or cease all masonic magic.

The Baron Samedi works so closely with Saint Martin de Porres; they share the same image.
